No More Pesky little bumps
Discover budget-friendly solutions to smooth your skin and reduce those pesky bumps.
What is Chicken Skin/Keratosis Pilaris?
Keratosis Pilaris, commonly referred to as chicken skin, is a benign skin condition characterized by small, rough bumps on the skin. These bumps often appear on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks and are caused by the buildup of keratin, a protein that protects the skin from infections and other harmful elements. When keratin blocks the hair follicles, it leads to the formation of these hard plugs, resulting in a bumpy texture.
First Aid Beauty KP Smoothing Body Lotion Double Pack
A multitasking combo with 10% AHA that combines the benefits of a chemical exfoliant and Moisturizer to banish bumps and hydrate skin!
In the summer of 2019, life was a whirlwind. Between balancing an excruciating factory job and schoolwork, I barely had time to breathe, let alone worry about my skin. It wasn’t until things calmed down and I had a moment to look at myself that I noticed those pesky little bumps on my upper arms. My once smooth and adored arms now looked like I had permanent goosebumps. My self-esteem took a hit every time I wanted to wear my favorite sleeveless tops or simply be comfortable in the hot weather.
Special Considerations for Dark Skin
One major challenge I faced during my journey was the lack of resources and discussions about KP on dark skin. Most online information and recommendations were targeted toward lighter skin tones, which left me struggling to find effective solutions that addressed my specific concerns.
For those with dark skin, KP can sometimes lead to hyperpigmentation, where the bumps and irritation cause dark spots that are more visible. It’s important to use products that not only treat KP but also address the potential for pigmentation issues. Ingredients like niacinamide and gentle chemical exfoliants can help even out skin tone and reduce dark spots.
Moreover, dark skin may react differently to certain treatments, requiring more hydration and gentler exfoliation to avoid irritation and further pigmentation. Finding a skincare routine that considers these unique needs can make a significant difference.
My battle with KP lasted a good five years, and I am still in the works. But I have finally found a combination that works for me.
Basics of Dealing with Keratosis Pilaris: Exfoliate and Moisturize
Managing KP involves a consistent skincare routine focusing on exfoliation and moisturization. While there’s no permanent cure for KP, these steps can help reduce the appearance of bumps and smooth the skin.
Exfoliation
Exfoliation is key to managing KP. By removing dead skin cells, you can help prevent keratin buildup. You can use two main types of exfoliants.
Moisturization
Keeping the skin hydrated is crucial for managing KP. Dry skin can exacerbate the condition, making the bumps more pronounced. Choose moisturizers that contain ingredients like urea, ceramides, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid, which help to attract and retain moisture in the skin.
How I tackled my KP bumps
Over the years, I experimented with various product combinations to manage my KP.
It was never a straight forward journey either. I tried things and made observations based on 2-3 weeks of consistent use. Here’s a rundown of what I’ve tried and how they fared.
Start from my kitchen : Coffee Scrub
Like every other Indian person raised by an Indian mother I took to my pantry.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup coffee grounds
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup coconut oil or olive oil
- A few drops of tea tree oil
- Optional: 1 tablespoon honey
- Mix Ingredients: Combine coffee grounds, sugar, and oil in a bowl. Add tea tree oil and honey if desired, stirring until you get a coarse paste.
- Application: Use the scrub during your shower twice a week. Apply in circular motions on your upper arms and body.
- Massage: Spend about 10 minutes massaging the scrub into your skin.
- Rinse and Moisturize: Rinse off thoroughly and follow up with a moisturizer.
This coffee scrub leaves your skin smooth and hydrated, making it a great addition to your routine. While it didn’t clear my Keratosis Pilaris completely, it still made my skin feel amazing. Remember, don’t exfoliate every day!
This was before I started discovering words like Glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid and all the skin care buzz words and I started realizing the depth of the skincare world.
Glycolic Acid
So obvious next step was, I switch to a glycolic acid-based exfoliant. I figured this was a simple enough start to the trial-and-error journey.
I started using the Ordinary Glycolic acid 7%. The chemical exfoliant was less abrasive and seemed to reduce the Keratosis Pilaris bumps more effectively. But the results were not very impressive for me. I think I was also impatient. But this was an easy addition to my everyday skincare routine. I also dipped my toes into the whole use glycolic acid as deodorant phase – but I digress(If you are wondering if it works, I honestly think it does work but I prefer my Dove deodorant).
I was using CeraVe SALICYLIC ACID Lotion at this point as a moisturizer. Wonderful stuff, I love it. I had stepped away from moisturizers that smell like chocolate and cinnamon and vanilla and other vegetables and fruits and was starting on more “serious ones”.
I still use glycolic acid – which helps gently exfoliate the skin by removing the top layers of dead skin cells. Glycolic acid also seems to help reverse sun damage to the skin. But I was looking for something stronger, and badass because the KP bumps were putting up a real defense.
Salicylic Acid Wash
A salicylic acid wash was my next attempt. I started using the CeraVe Salicylic Acid Cleanser alongside the CeraVe Salicylic Acid Lotion. This combination effectively unclogged my pores and hydrated my skin. However, I wasn’t seeing the results I hoped for.
The Combo That Actually Gave Me a Good Result
After much trial and error, I found a combination that significantly improved my Keratosis Pilaris.
I discovered Sulphur !
Yes, you heard that right. Who knew the stinky element from my chemistry lab would become my saving grace? After exhausting my patience (which is quite limited), I started researching resurfacing and exfoliating ingredients and discovered the benefits of sulfur for treating acne. I knew I had to give it a try.
Salicylic Acid + Sulphur Body soap
Salicylic acid is a BHA that penetrates deep into the pores, helping to dissolve the keratin plugs that cause Keratosis Pilaris. Sulphur is known for its abilities to unclog pores and give the bacteria living on your skin a what-for.
So I started using Revitale Advanced Salicylic Acid & Sulphur Scrub Treatment Soap – it has two major exfoliating ingredients Sulphur and Salicylic acid. I knew I was on to something.
Using Revitale Advanced Salicylic Acid & Sulphur Scrub Treatment Soap in the shower allowed me to exfoliate gently and effectively without causing irritation. I found that using it twice a week was enough to keep the bumps at bay without over-drying my skin.
Ceramide-Infused Moisturizer
Since I was using a strong exfoliant soap twice a week I switched from my Salicylic acid Lotion to a Ceramide-Infused Moisturizer. Ceramides are lipids that help to restore and maintain the skin’s natural barrier. After cleansing I applied a ceramide-infused moisturizer – The Lubriderm Original Lotion. This not only provided deep hydration but also helped to repair and protect my skin. The combination of exfoliation and intense moisturization made a noticeable difference in the texture and appearance of my skin.
At this point I started seeing great results. The soap twice a week and the lotion everyday was doing amazing things for my skin.
The last piece of the puzzle
I accidentally discovered the best physical exfoliant I’ve ever used while doom-scrolling on Instagram. It was a small green square washcloth, reviewed by a Korean wellness influencer. It looked very promising, so I had to try it.
Suggested use is to rub it in circular motions on wet skin to polish off the dead skin layer—complete with the characteristic gray wormy thingies from wash mitten videos. I opted for a gentler approach, using it as my regular washcloth with soap and gentle pressure.
This was it. My chicken skin problems started looking like a problem of yesterday.
Routine Consistency
Consistency is key. Sticking to this routine diligently, even on days when I didn’t feel like it, was crucial for seeing results. It took about six weeks of consistent use to notice a significant improvement, but the effort was worth it.
I recommend..
Additional Tips

Q: Why is sunscreen important after using exfoliants?
A: Always apply sunscreen on exposed skin, especially after using exfoliants, as they can increase sensitivity to sunlight.
Q: What soaps should I avoid for sensitive skin?
A: Switch to mild, fragrance-free soaps to prevent further irritation to your skin.
Q: How can hydration improve my skin’s condition?
A: Drinking plenty of water and maintaining overall hydration can significantly enhance your skin’s appearance and health.
Keratosis Pilaris is genetic and can be influenced by factors like stress and dryness. While it is often treatment-resistant, it is possible to significantly reduce its appearance with the right skincare routine. Remember, KP is harmless and primarily a cosmetic concern.
Finding the right combination of products and sticking to a consistent routine can make a world of difference. It’s important not to let it take over your headspace. After all, embracing and taking care of your skin, bumps and all, is what truly matters.
By understanding what works best for your skin and staying committed, you can achieve smoother, healthier-looking skin and confidently wear those sleeveless tops once again.
